Collegium Maius - The oldest building of the Jagiellonian University - We will visit historic interiors that once served professors and students, the treasury, professor's rooms, the apartment of St. John Cantius associated with the university or the auditorium. How to sort laundry by color?

It can be easy to throw mixed laundry in the washing machine, but if you don't want everything to turn an odd shade of pink or grey, it's best to learn how to segregate your laundry.

Sort clothes by color

Dark colored garments are more likely to bleed when washed. To avoid damaging other clothes, sort the laundry by color, dividing it into 5 groups.

White clothes and only white

There's nothing better than a fresh white shirt or a new white T-shirt. But let's face it, keeping white clothes perfectly white can be a challenge.

Light-colored clothes may fade, but there is nothing more irritating than white laundry that has turned yellow.

In addition to dust and dirt caused by classic pollutants, putting white clothes in the washing machine together with other soiled clothes, such as socks, can also make it dirty.

Dye from other clothes can also penetrate the spot of white fabric and leave discoloration.

When washing clothes, people sometimes mix white clothes with light clothes or worse, with dark clothes to save energy and detergent, unfortunately this has a negative effect on our wardrobe.

Therefore, first of all, turn your clothes inside out. Secondly, wash with cool water - washing in cold water instead of hot water not only helps keep colors vibrant, it also saves energy and money.

Black and only black clothes

To keep black clothes deep black, always wash them together and inside out. Wash in cold water, max 40 degrees celsius, gentle cycle. Avoid washing powder that is white and will show up on your clothes if it doesn't rinse well. Be sure to use a low temperature in the dryer.

How to wash to wash curtains?

We all know what fantastic properties curtains can bring to any home. They can diffuse light and even block it. Curtains and drapes are an investment for your home, so proper care is extremely important.

Every day, curtains and drapes are exposed to dust and dirt, which can affect their aesthetics as well as durability, so they need a little care from time to time. And knowing how to wash curtains can be surprising.

Clean curtains without removing

We know how arduous and exhausting it is to take off and put on curtains and curtains from the curtain rod, so in order to keep them clean and get rid of mites, it is good to vacuum the hanging window decorations with a vacuum cleaner once in a while. Use the weakest suction power, which will allow us to remove dust and possible hair from them. Then use a steam iron to get rid of the mites.

In order for our curtains to regain their shine, you should start with soaking them in warm water, but not higher than 40 degrees, with a small amount of detergent. The time of such soaking is about an hour, after this time, replace the water with clean water, add the appropriate detergent again and gently surface and immerse in this solution so as not to damage the decorations. Use the available preparations for washing curtains, they have washing but also whitening properties, and after using them, such a curtain is more susceptible to pinning and forming in the window.

After rinsing, gently squeeze the wet curtain and hang it so that it drips off excess water.

We never dry the curtain before hanging it, if we hang a damp curtain in our window, it will form nicely for us and will not have creases.

Machine washing curtains

It may come as a surprise to everyone, but before washing in the washing machine, just as before hand washing, soak the curtain for about an hour in warm water with detergent. This will soften the dirt hidden in the fibres. Before putting it in the washing machine, it is good to protect all elements that can damage the curtain and the washing machine, such as: clips, hooks and protruding decorations. However, it is most convenient to put the folded curtain in a special laundry net. We wash at a low temperature, up to 30 degrees Celsius  on a program designed for curtains, and if your washing machine does not have one, select a program designed for delicate items. Set spin to a maximum of 800 revolutions per second, which allows you to put the curtain on the window right away, and they will straighten themselves and there will be no need to iron them.

Is it worth drying curtains in a tumble dryer?

If you want to dry your curtains in a tumble dryer, you must remember about a few important rules.

Don't cram too many curtains into one dryer. Let the curtain dry but not crease. If you plan to dry the curtain in a household dryer, it is best to dry one maximum of two curtains in one cycle (depending on their size.

If you're going to the laundromat. The matter is simpler, because usually in such laundries we have much larger dryers at our disposal.

The next important thing is the temperature. We choose the lowest available temperature. Most often, in home dryers, we have a special program for drying curtains. In self-service laundries, we simply select the lowest drying temperature.

And most importantly - we do not dry the curtains dry. Hang slightly damp curtains on the window. Then we will avoid unnecessary creases and ironing.

Which detergents to choose for washing curtains?

There is a whole range of curtain washing agents available on the market, most of them with the addition of bleaching agents and sodium compounds. However, remember not to use such agents when washing colorful curtains or in different shades. You may as well use traditional washing powders and gels, but remember to use them in smaller amounts, the structure of the curtain causes aeration of the water-detergent solution, which results in too much foam.

Home ways for perfect curtains

One of the interesting ways is to add vinegar and salt to the soaking of curtains, the purpose of which is to whiten our window wonders and stiffen them so that they lay beautifully.

You can add a glass of vinegar to washing in the washing machine, which will soften the water and make it easier to wash and whiten the curtains, and it will also have a good effect on our washing machine if we have hard water.

We know well that curtains absorb odors from the environment. To get rid of them, add lemon juice or baking powder to your washing.

A quite original and ecological way is to add cleaned and crushed egg shells to the washing machine, placed in a cotton bag, it is an effective way to get rid of yellow discoloration on our curtains.

Good quality down clothing is a big expense, so it's good to know how to wash it so as not to damage it. We advise you to take advantage of the convenience of a washing machine, especially since more and more new washing machines have specialized programs for washing such clothes. It is very important to use cold temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius and a delicate program. Of course, we follow the manufacturer's recommendations on the label. It is very important to close all zippers and turn the jacket inside out - this will protect it from mechanical damage. Larger dirt on the sleeves or on the collar should be cleaned beforehand with a sponge soaked in a preparation for washing down clothes.An element conducive to securing the quality of our down jacket is gentle spinning. Remember to spin 800 revolutions per minute, thanks to which the filling will not break or damage, and its properties will still please the owner of the jacket.

How to wash a down jacket?

Down clothing should be washed in detergents intended for this purpose. An additional advantage of some detergents for washing down jackets is the impregnation that creates a hydrophobic layer. It protects our clothes from getting wet on rainy days. Do not use powder or capsules, and even more so softeners - they cause the fluff to compact and stick together, which under their influence loses its properties. How to dry down clothes?

All down-filled textiles can and even should be tumble dried. This provides our down clothing with super aeration of the down filling. In addition, it is good to throw a few tennis balls in the dryer. They break up and evenly distribute the down. Remember to dry down jackets in dryers with cool airflow. Hot air can damage the structure of down. If you're going to our self-service laundromat, you'll need 40-60 minutes of low-temperature drying to dry your jacket well.

First wash of towels

Important Rule! when you buy new towels, wash them first before you start using them!!!.

There are several reasons, the most important being hygiene.

In fact, before perfect towels reach our bathroom, they go through a long way, among other things, they are coated with chemicals so that pests do not get to them in dusty warehouses and do not cause havoc, while in stores they are touched by potential customers, who  check the appropriate thickness, softness and quality of the material from which they are made.

That is why it is important to wash such a towel before use

Another reason is to improve the absorbency of the towel, soaked cotton fibers open, which after drying increases the absorption capacity and comfort of use.

Many of us choose beautiful, fluffy and colorful towels that are aesthetically matched to our bathrooms, so the residues of the dye used to dye the towels should be rinsed off during the first wash before they leave a colorful image on our skin.

How often should you wash your towels?

The frequency of washing towels is one of the contentious topics in society, not when and in the immediate family.

Some believe that they should be washed after each use and others say that they are used to dry a clean body, so they do not need to be replaced so often. Therefore, without exposing any of the groups, we will refer to the scientific authority, microbiologist Philip Thierno.

At what temperature to wash towels?

To prolong the life of our towels and make them soft, wash them at a temperature between 40 degrees and 60 degrees Celsius. Too low a temperature will not wash our towels, while too high will make our towels clumpy and unpleasant to the touch, and will quickly be destroyed by weakening the fibers.

There are supporters of boiling towels at 90 degrees Celsius for hygienic reasons, but it is not necessary, because expert opinions prove that most bacteria and viruses die at a temperature of 55 degrees Celsius to 70 degrees Celsius.

What detergents should I use for washing towels?

Use a washing gel or capsules as the powder often does not wash out of the many towel fibers. Do not overdo it with chemical detergents, follow the recommendations given on the packaging. Always consider water hardness, it prolongs the life of your towels and washing machine.

Natural ways for a perfectly washed towel

Our grandmothers used the addition of baking soda to wash towels, which made the towels soft and well-washed. In addition, soda combined with spirit vinegar ensures the maintenance of beautiful vivid colors and hygienic cleanliness, the smell of vinegar quickly evaporates without leaving an unpleasant odor.

For greyish white towels, bloggers advise adding two aspirin tablets, this is to make the whiteness after taking it out of the washing machine delightful, my towels did not change to a whiter shade, so I recommend using aspirin more for colds.

How to wash towels?

Definitely do not wash towels with other items of clothing.

Separate towels by color or light and dark, then you will avoid staining light towels and graying white ones. The fibers of the towel are absorbent and susceptible to receiving dyes from the outside.

The maximum amount of load is half of the capacity of the drum, which allows you to wash well the thick material from which the towels are made and rinse well from detergents.

How to dry towels?

The best method for a fluffy towel is tumble drying. A warm blast of air causes the fibers to aerate and such a towel is pleasant to the touch for our body and does not leave irritation. However, many of us do not have such facilities in our homes, so it is worth using the popular laundries that have already appeared in every city and dry such towels efficiently and effectively for little money.

If, however, you decide on traditional drying, hang the towels in such a way that they have air circulation, do not close them in a room where there is no air circulation. Best dried outdoors. It is a good idea to shake such towels often and hang them upside down.

Separating clothes before washing
